Amazon came in first in terms of preference when people were asked what store or restaurant they typically purchase gift cards for in 2017 (23.8% of respondents).
Gift Card Granny (http://www.GiftCardGranny.com), the largest website for discount gift card deals, conducted its annual survey on November 14th to determine the latest gift card trends for 2017. The survey questions ranged from most popular cards to card preferences (digital vs. plastic), to purchase behavior and card redemption.
MOST POPULAR GIFT CARDS OF 2017
Amazon came in first in terms of preference when people were asked what store or restaurant they typically purchase gift cards for in 2017 (23.8% of respondents). Walmart (20.3%) , Target (19.4%) , and Starbucks (19%) carried over in popularity from 2016, remaining firmly in the Top 5. Kohl’s (9.4%), Lowe’s (8.4%), and Olive Garden (7.5%) came in as other favorite brands.
TOP ONLINE RETAILERS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Amazon topped the list when respondents were asked what was their number one online retailer that they planned to shop at this holiday season (39.7% of people). Walmart (8%) and Target (6%) rounded out the Top 3 responses. This year’s survey revealed a strong correlation between the gift cards people prefer most and where they plan to shop with Amazon, Walmart, and Target finishing in the Top 3 for both questions.
DIGITAL GIFT CARD TRENDS CONTINUE TO GROW
44% of respondents reported using a mobile gift card app to make a gift card purchase in 2017, that’s up nearly 22% from 2016, when 36% said they used an app to purchase a gift card.
In addition to mobile apps growing in popularity, so too are people’s preference for digital gift cards as opposed to traditional plastic. 10% more people preferred to give or receive a digital (eGift) card in 2017 (37.8%) compared to last year (27.5%). The remaining 34.5% had no preference between digital or plastic.
COMBINING A COUPON WITH A DISCOUNT GIFT CARD
It is well known that holiday shoppers take advantage of coupon savings for their gift buys, but the survey uncovered another money saving tactic that is more well known than first thought. 70% of shoppers disclosed they have stacked savings at the register or online checkout by using a coupon in addition to their pre-purchased discount gift card. The double savings trend appears to be most popular among the 35-44 year old age group with 75% reporting having done so.
